ABOUT
LEAP (Leaders of Environmental Awareness and Preservation) is a student-run recycling organization that works to reduce paper and cardboard waste at Hamtramck High School. Our goal is to help our school and community become more environmentally friendly. We team up with other community organizations, such as the Be a Good Neighbor Project, and we help out at the Bandhu Community Garden. Around Hamtramck we have picked up litter, planted trees, made a rain garden, and helped with the recycling commission. We spread awareness about pollution and climate change by working on community projects, such as air quality monitoring and making funny videos to promote being environmentally friendly. LEAP is composed of students from grades 9-12 at Hamtramck High. We have over 30 members, 9 E-board members, and one sponsor. We have presented in front of the school board and we won an H-Soup mini-grant in 2018. Our teachers and administrators have commended us for our work in school and in the community.

As the project manager, I come up with new creative projects for LEAP like organizing plant sales, creating a video to promote the Period Project, and inspiring and demonstrating to members how they can be more sustainable by repurposing.

Hi! My name is Maria. I've been in LEAP for 3 years currently. I loved gardening ever since I was a kid. I love learning about different types of plants and helping the environment in any way possible. I love makeup and fashion. I am known for my eyeliner. ♡

I update LEAP's website, manage the LEAP discord server, and organize LEAP's files. I also edit and help produce the annual LEAP videos.
