Gardening

Our club helps out at a community garden in Detroit called Bandhu Gardens. We grow fruits and vegetables during the Spring and Summer. In the Fall, members can go and harvest the plants and take them home. Working in a community garden is also a great way to interact with the community. People share their knowledge about native plants and organisms. It brings our small community closer together.

Tree Planting

Our club has been planting trees in the city for a few years now. We team up with the City and Greening of Detroit, a non-profit organization. Trees benefit the environment greatly. Trees reduce runoff water, which reduces erosion and pollution. Many animals such as squirrels, reside in trees and rely on them for food. Tree-planting gives more homes to animals and birds.

Recycling

In our school, every classroom has a plastic bin to put the paper in. Every week our members collect the paper and cardboard from the classrooms. We store them in large garbage bins and then take them to a recycling center. Throwing away used paper is very wasteful and our school uses a lot of paper. The paper can be recycled and made into new paper.

Be A Good Neighbor

A community driven group, with students from Hamtramck high school, focused on making change in the community through a series of projects. With the BGNP, members of LEAP are introduced to different career opportunities through guest speakers, learn public speaking skills, help lead efforts to promote environmental awareness, and do projects like making reusable shopping bags out of t-shirts, and planting trees.
